Rock on

I have always been a rock collector. I love how smooth and heavy they are- perfect for skipping stones on the lake or weighting your beach towels down. But what do you do with them when you get them home?

I couldn’t tell you where these rocks came from- but being someone who is always keeping an eye out for ways to create new things from stuff I have on hand, I decided to work with my rock collection. They were a dull gray color. The first thing to be done was add color so I painted them in nice bright colors. Then I tried to get the “rock” frame of mine and think of some clever words to write on them (but here’s what came out). Bling was added in the form of pretty rhinestones and a coat of spray sealer was added protect the finish.

This was a fun little project that got me thinking outside the box and glad that I had picked those rocks up long ago.

You could actually add lots of other items to the rocks, including buttons, trim and small photos. They also make great place holders at events, especially if it’s outside. Simply write the guest’s name on the rock with a paint pen and add a little swirl or doodle.

Every year I make batches of what I call Word Stones for the craft shows I do in the fall. The price is $1 and these things sell like hotcakes. All I do is write in my best calligraphy or funky print on rocks. I use paint pens and write words like “best friends”, “love peace joy”, and “family memories”. I had one lady come and order 20 rocks that said “victory” on them. She was a cancer survivor and wanted to pass these along as she met others in different stages of this experience and give the rocks as encouragement. Meeting people like her are one of the reasons I love doing craft shows.

Does anyone else out there collect rocks? Any good ideas for display? Let me know!

Susie, thanks for sharing all those other cool things that can be done with rocks! It makes me want to go mine again and see what else I can do with them. I especially like what you did with your daughter- creating together and forging some good memories. I’ll let you know what else I do with mine :-)

Eileen, I love your rocks! I have been a lover of rocks as long as I can remember. Right now, I have at least a couple of boxes of rocks in my craft closet. My daughter and I, when she was young, painted rocks and glued the different sizes together to create animals: a duck, duckling, and egg; a frog, etc. We still have those rocks and have the fond memories of creating them. I also stack rocks in my garden. One year I did that as a faith response when my daughter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. (She is cancer free for over 10 years.) I have had kids paint rocks in VBS with words like “faith” and “love”… They also make great bookends and door stops.
